On July 30, the Baku Court for Grave Crimes held the final hearing in the criminal case against blogger Qabil Mammadov, who currently resides abroad. The trial was conducted in absentia under the chairmanship of Judge Elnur Nuriyev. Mammadov was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The case against him was initiated by the Investigation Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office and includes charges under 24 different articles of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code, including fraud by false promises to individuals, extortion, terrorism-related offenses, resisting a state official, and organising actions that disturb public order. Mammadov, who has been living in exile in Europe for an extended period, is widely known for his outspoken criticism of the Azerbaijani government and its officials.
