Georgian authorities have fined Azerbaijani exiled journalist Afghan Sadygov a total of GEL 275,000 (approximately EUR 87,800) for allegedly “artificially blocking the road” on Rustaveli Avenue. According to the Social Justice Center, the rights group representing Sadygov, the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued 55 fines against him between July and October, without notifying him in advance. The organization discovered the fines only after reviewing a court ruling related to Sadygov’s recent detention and 14-day jail sentence—also for blocking the road, under stricter penalties introduced in the newly amended Law on Freedom of Assembly. Sadygov previously spent nine months in detention in Georgia pending extradition but was released following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Since his release, he has been an active participant in protests held on Rustaveli Avenue.
