The Pervomaysky District Court of Bishkek left the previously detained journalist in a pre-trial detention centre. Like other members of the Temirov Live team, Azamat Ishenbekov was detained, arrested, and interrogated on January 16 together with 10 other investigative journalists. On January 17, he was taken to a temporary detention centre and then to a pre-trial detention centre. He is charged under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic (calls for mass riots), which provides up to 8 years in prison. Ishenbekov did investigative journalism for Temirov Live’s Ait Ait Dese project. He is also known as an akyn, folk storyteller and author of poems on topical issues. Temirov Live journalists specialise in investigating corruption in the highest echelons of power.
