The Baku Court on Grave Crimes has handed down an in absentia verdict against U.S.-based blogger and political activist Murad Guliyev. On January 26, the Baku Serious Crimes Court sentenced Guliyev to six years in prison. He was convicted of making “public calls aimed at the violent seizure or retention of power, the violent change of the constitutional order, and the undermining of the country’s territorial integrity” (Article 281.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan). Guliyev denies the charges, saying the case was fabricated to silence him.
