Welcome to the Justice for Journalists Foundation August-September 2025 Newsletter

MEDIA RISK MAP

In August and September, JFJ recorded 124 attacks on journalists and media outlets from eight post-Soviet countries – Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine, featuring attacks against journalists and media outlets. Among these attacks, 17 were physical, 18 were non-physical and cyber-attacks and 89 – attacks via judicial and economic means. As in the last months, perpetrators were the state authorities and affiliated organisations. For more detailed information about these incidents, visit the JFJ’s Media Risk Map

UK MEDIA FREEDOM FORUM

As we prepare for the UK Media Freedom Forum 2026, we invite participants and stakeholders to help shape the conversation around the most pressing issues facing media freedom today. Your input and engagement will help ensure the Forum reflects the real-world challenges and opportunities confronting media professionals today.

EVENTS

  • On October 10, JFJ, in partnership with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, will host two side events during the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference: Exile Is Not Safety: Countering Transnational Repression of Journalists (8:30 AM at 3 Krolewski) and Voices Behind Bars: Political Imprisonment Across the OSCE Participating States (16:00 at 2 Saski). Join these discussions to explore pressing issues facing journalists today. 
  • On October 20-21, JFJ will take part in the annual ASOC Alliance Annual Safety Coordination Meeting. The meeting brings together news organisations, NGOs, journalists, editors and security experts for creative and candid cross-industry conversations around journalist safety. 
  • On October 21-22, JFJ will attend the Trust Conference in London, UK.  The conference brings together more than 700 world-leading experts, innovators, and activists who are tackling global challenges at the intersection of media freedom, technology, law, and responsible business practices. 
  • On October 23-25, JFJ’s partner, the International Press Institute, will host the World Congress and Media Innovation Festival in Vienna, Austria. The Congress will tackle the challenges facing journalism today and chart a path forward to safeguard free media for future generations. Register to attend. 
  • On September 16, a conference Belarusian Journalism: Where Tomorrow Begins conference took place in Vilnius, Lithuania. JFJ’s partner – the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) organised the conference took commemorate the Association’s 30th anniversary. BAJ chairman Andrei Bastunets launched the project Journalists: The Silent Mode, that documents persecution and repression of journalists. Currently, 29 media workers remain behind bars in Belarus. 
  • On September 30, JFJ attended a panel discussion titled Transnational Repression on Journalism at the Frontline Club in London, UK. Following the July 2025 Joint Committee on Human Rights report, which revealed foreign regimes targeting critics in the UK, this panel brought together leading journalists and lawyers to explore how governments are weaponising international law through INTERPOL Red Notices, digital surveillance, and diplomatic pressure to silence journalists.

  • PEN America has published the guide What To Do If You’ve Been Doxed Or Placed On A Watchlist, offering practical advice on how to recognise if you have been doxed, how long the risks might last, and steps to protect your own and your family’s physical safety.
