London, January 16, 2023 – The Justice for Journalists Foundation invites media organisations and workers to submit applications for its annual Investigative Grant Programme. Applications for journalistic Investigations of violence and abuse against journalists, freelancers and bloggers will be accepted through March 5, 2023.
This year, the Justice for Journalists Foundation will welcome grant applications in the following subject areas:
- Investigations into the crimes against journalists operating in conflict zones, hostile environments, and/or during protests (i.e. Ukraine, Iran, Afghanistan, China);
- Proposals that help to raise awareness of and support campaigns against Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (SLAPP) both in the context of the UK and globally;
- Case studies and concept notes on the safety of journalists living and working in exile with the focus on the following issues:
- Methods of attacks against exiled independent media (Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Iran, Turkey, Belarus, Russia, etc. )
- surveillance
- extrajudicial killings
- cyber attacks
- harassment of relatives and friends remaining in the autocracies
- How to safely maintain access to and expand audiences inside countries with suppressed independent media (Iran, Afghanistan, Belarus, Russia, Myanmar, etc.);
- How to safely maintain contact with sources and protect them both in the country and in exile;
- How to ensure cyber-security and stay clear of surveillance;
- How to form safe partnerships and build alliances;
- How to enlist international support and protection for the independent media in exile.
The Justice for Journalists Foundation and its Advisory and Expert Boards and trustees will consider all applications that meet the Foundation’s criteria. This year we will only accept proposals with the maximum amount of USD 80’000 offered for each individual grant.
Grant applicants should provide a detailed budget for their investigative project along with 500-words long project description to demonstrate that their proposal is solid. The project proposal should highlight what is new and significant about the story and what its potential impact might be. The proposal should contain:
- outline of the reporting plan;
- timeline for completing the project; and
- preliminary agreements with media outlets that would publish or broadcast the resulting piece.
The Justice for Journalists Foundation together with its Advisory and Expert Boards will examine applications between March 6, 2023 and April 30, 2023 and after due consideration, the trustees of the Foundation shall announce their decision on World Press Freedom Day 3 May, 2023.
