Kanykey Aranova, who is known for raising issues related to the Kempir-Abad reservoir lands, was detained in Moscow and taken to Kyrgyzstan. Activists believe the arrest is related to her Facebook posts and her criticism of the authorities over the so-called «Kempir-Abad case», the issue of transferring a reservoir in the south of the country to Uzbekistan. Kanykey lived and worked in Moscow with her 11-year-old daughter. The previous day, Russian police arrested her in the metro and took her daughter straight from school to the airport. On the morning of February 1, the State Committee for National Security officers took Aranova from Bishkek airport and her daughter was sent to Osh, the southern capital. On February 5, 2023, the Pervomaysky District Court of Bishkek arrested Aranova until March 22. She was charged with inciting discord and public calls for seizure of power.
