JFJ Investigative Grant Programme 2020

Justice for Journalists Foundation funds an annual Investigative Grant Programme that aims to help professional and citizen journalists to investigate violent crimes against media workers. This Programme contributes to finding justice for victims and fighting impunity around the world.

Submission of proposals for the next year Investigative Grant Programme will be open in January 2020. In order to register your interest, you will need to fill in the application form that will be available via the JFJ website and social networks at the end of this year. The Foundation’s Expert and Advisory Board’s will consider all applications that meet JFJ’s criteria.

JFJ grants cover the hard costs of getting to the investigative story and reporting it — flight costs, hotels, meals, local ground transportation, fixers, translators, etc. up to but not exceeding USD 80’000. Moderate fees for investigative journalistic work will also be covered.

Grant applicants are expected to provide 500-words long project description to demonstrate that their proposal is solid. The project proposal should:

  • Highlight what is new and significant about the story and what the potential impact might be.
  • Contain an outline of the reporting plan.
  • Contain the timeline for completing the project.
  • Contain the output of the story.
  • Highlight any potential interest from media outlets (if there is an interest registered).

JFJ also requires all grant applicants to provide a detailed budget plan that will include insurance and costs of safety training and/or consultants if travelling to the hostile zone during their investigation.

We believe that risk prevention and safety are the most important factors journalists should consider while doing their work. Therefore we encourage all journalists to undergo risk assessments and safety training before starting an investigation of any sort.

Full information for the 2020 Investigative Grant Programme will be released later this year. In the meantime, you can find out winners of JFJ Investigative Grant Programme for 2019 here: https://jfj.fund/winners-of-the-jfj-investigative-grant-programme/
